Aaron Bleackley cuts every Wild Gears set on his own laser cutter from a single sheet of clear acrylic in Vancouver: geared drawing kits for spirograph-style art, from the CAD$20 Travel set and CAD$49 Compact, Hoops and Encyclopedic sets up to CAD$99 Full Page, Enormous, Paisley and Mandala Maker sets and the fourteen-page Encyclopedic 3 (CAD$99 a page or CAD$1,120 complete), each sheet yielding a matching ring for every gear plus non-circular gears in squares, triangles, pentagons and, in his words, "stranger shapes".
Wild Gears sets are a drawing toy, described on the site as "the geared drawing toy for the 21st century", which puts them on HTS 9503.00.00, the toys and puzzles line on the CBP Section 338 list carrying a 50% additional duty on entry to the United States since August 22, 2026. On a CAD$99 large gear set that is close to CAD$50 in duty before shipping, on a shop whose base prices Bleackley says he has held for more than a decade. He had already told American customers in February 2026 that "all packages are being charged a 10% duty before shipment" and that he collects it at checkout as a separate line item; the Section 338 duty is charged on top of the ordinary rate.Source: content.govdelivery.com, Aug 22, 2026
In their own words
The shipping rules for packages entering the USA from Canada have changed and now all packages are being charged a 10% duty before shipment. That duty is being collected as part of the checkout process and will display as a separate line item.

Posted under the heading "Feb 2026: American Shipping Duty (10%)" on the shop's news page, this is Bleackley telling American buyers he now collects US duty at checkout rather than letting it surprise them at the door.
Wild Gears ship from Canada. There is, currently, a USD$800 (~CAD$1104) threshold for packages, under which they have no duty collected. That threshold is slated to be removed entirely on August 29th, 2025. This means that packages that are currently able to be imported without any duty being collected will be subject to fees after August 29th.

A year before the Section 338 list, Bleackley used his newsletter to warn US customers under the heading "Shipping news and important dates for Americans" that the de minimis exemption their orders relied on was about to disappear.

Made in Canada
The shipping page states it flatly: "Wild Gears are manufactured in Vancouver, BC, Canada and shipped globally", and Bleackley brought the work in house himself, writing that "In 2019 I bought a big laser cutter and started doing my own manufacturing of Wild Gears".

The shop's own description of the product is "Wild Gears are the geared drawing toy for the 21st century", built as gear-and-ring sets where "Each gear set is made from one solid sheet of acrylic that is laser cut to produce gears and rings", and the maker states that "Wild Gears are manufactured in Vancouver, BC, Canada and shipped globally". A geared drawing toy is an "other toy" under HTS 9503.00.00 on the CBP Section 338 list.
