Mike and Pamela Davidson pack unpasteurized Canada No. 1 golden liquid honey into squeezable skeps, wide-mouth jars and bears from 140 g to 1 kg, plus creamed and raw honey in glass jars, and sell pure beeswax, shaped beeswax candles, a 60 ml propolis tincture and 10-litre feeder pails out of a processing plant on William Street in Merlin.

Summer's Gold liquid honey is natural honey under HTS 0409.00.00 on the CBP Section 338 list, taxed 50% on entry to the United States since August 22, 2026. Owner Mike Davidson's fear is what that duty does at home: with the Prairie crop shut out of the American market that took nearly $28.5 million of Canadian honey last year, he told CBC Windsor on August 18, 2026, "So if they're under pressure to dump, they'll be dumping ... in Ontario at cheap prices on grocery store shelves", against Ontario producers with "crops three times as big as ours".

In their own words

  • The western beekeepers — Alberta and Manitoba, Saskatchewan — have a co-op

Davidson explains to CBC Windsor how the Prairie crop reaches Ontario shelves once the American market closes.

  • So if they're under pressure to dump, they'll be dumping ... in Ontario at cheap prices on grocery store shelves.

The Merlin packer's read on where 50%-tariffed Prairie honey goes instead of south.

  • That means Ontario beekeepers have to follow them down. And they have crops three times as big as ours.

Made in Canada

"Here at The Summer's Gold Honey Company, family isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing": the family built "a CFIA registered honey processing facility" in "the quaint village of Merlin Ontario" and are "producers, packers, wholesalers and retailers of some of the finest honey Canada has to offer", warming the honey only enough to filter and pack it so "All the nutrients, vitamins, natural yeast, enzymes and pollen are still in the honey."

On the tariff list

  • HTS 0409.00.00 · Natural honey · 50% since Aug 22, 2026

The shop sells "1 kg Liquid Honey Squeezable Skep Canada No. 1 Golden" and says "All of Summer's Gold Honey Company honey is unpasteurized", which is natural honey under HTS 0409.00.00. Note for review: CBC's August 18, 2026 story is headlined "even if they don't export their product" - the duty covers the honey Summer's Gold packs, but the harm Davidson describes is the domestic price collapse rather than lost US sales of his own.

Rates are the additional US duty under Section 338. About the tariffs
